Oh No…There Goes Tokyo…

(Guest Post by Matthew Ladner)

So my children have acquired a taste for cheesy pop culture. It’s in their DNA. Last summer my son Benjamin watched the epic battle between Captain Kirk and the Gorn from the original Star Trek series and pronounced it as “Kirk versus the Halloween Costume.”

Last week I allowed them to watch a couple of Godzilla flicks, which led to the reactment on the piano bench you see above.

Go, Go Godzilla!!

Hey, let’s not dis the Gorn episode. Combining charcoal, sulfur and saltpeter…. t’was a very sticky chemistry lesson for a whole generation of kids!

The other lesson for young’uns is that their elders were obviously easy to please if the Gorn episode is representative.

Along with a dubious chemistry lesson the episode makes it clear that the impressive set of teeth and jaws sported by the Gorn are decorative. Otherwise, after the first clinch Kirk would’ve been seperated from his head.

That leads to the inescapable conclusion that the Gorn were, in fact, peaceful vegetarians who probably had a low threshold of tolerance for comically egotistical actors and cheesy plot lines.
