Udacity has bypassed universities to develop partnerships directly with employers to develop markets for nano-degrees earned online. I **ahem** can’t see why a student with an ESA could not earn a couple of these as a high-school student, you know, if it struck their fancy.
But if we replace universities, who will be there to charge an engineering major $3,000 to take Introduction to World Civilizations to meet one of their social science requirements?!?!
The answer to your question is: Udacity, probably, or someone like them – and they’ll make the course attractive to engineers because that’s how they get business.
One thing is for sure, in a technocratic society where the only universally recognized public authority figures are scientists and engineers, we damn well better make sure scientists and engineers understand civilization.
And if we dont, we get Bill Gates.
And he’s just the opening act. It gets worse from there.
Although, come to think of it, Gates dropped out so curricular requirements wouldn’t have saved him anyway!
