Looks like a big battle looming in Gotham. I predict DeBlasio’s notion of charging rent to certain types of public schools (charters) but not to others (districts) will end in tears one way or another if he is foolish enough to pursue it. Equal protection under the law anyone?
NYC charter supporters should be calling Clint Bolick about now.
Hmm. I’m skeptical that a Mayor couldn’t charge rent to charters. Remember, NYC is the outlier here. In most places, charters have no access to district buildings.
NYC charters, even given the option to rent, would be better off than charters elsewhere.
In Boston we fought hard for the right to RENT space from districts (only a few schools are offered to us).
Whether the battle is politically wise, that’s another story. My guess is – he’ll stop school closings; he’ll punt on existing charters and won’t charge rent; he’ll find a way to stop offering space to new charters.
