This article by Caity Chronkhite about her experience attending a rural Indiana school district in the recent past is an absolutely must read. This is without a doubt the most heartbreaking education story I have read in a long while. Spoiler alert but let’s just say that her success in life came in spite of the school system. The incredibly sickening cultural norms discussed are not limited to rural areas.

Wow, good thing she’s the only one! Let’s hope we never have any more cases like this one.
I did not raise one Vulcan eyebrow in fascination; while her education world is indeed in a different solar system from my own and where I teach, the dinner table stories of my parents (also teachers) and my experiences with my colleagues allow me to affirm, sadly, her account.
What angers me are the so-called educators who perpetrate these crimes, proving again why accountability through choice is indeed a civil right.
Amen pdexiii! It is horrible to see a school system not only abandon the ideal of being an engine of social mobility, but to actively discourage it.
