I am a big Herzburg fan and wrote an article on applying his methods. It is a mystery to me why the union does not spend more time and effort on work re-design for motivating more teachers and workplace conditions to end de-motivation. If they truly cared about their members wouldn't this deserve more focus than gay marraige initiatives?

Technology will force the re-design of the teaching profession and it could really motivate our teachers to do more for students. But that is going to have to come from the outside. I don't see anyone on the inside pushing for this.

(the article appeared in Industrial Engineering Magazing back in 1992 - so no online version sadly)

Greg-

I think you are on to something here. Merit pay programs ought not to be aimed at providing a few more sheckels for a bit better of an effort.

The main problem in my view is a huge (rational) bias held by capable and ambitious people against the teaching profession. Offering highly productive people into a union pay scale box with 22 students and the only way to advance is to get old is absurd.

Rock star pay for rock star teachers. I don't know how many students that rock star teachers can get big value added gains out for, but I sure do want to find out.
