After re-watching Season 4 on DVD, I’m convinced that those two had the same mother and are thus half-brothers. I’m also convinced that Mrs. Hawking is indeed Daniel’s mother.

Could it be that with the island skipping around, certain characters have already lived through certain events? This would explain why Locke was always saying, “This wasn’t SUPPOSED to happen!” or Ben whispering, “He changed the rules,” when his daughter was killed. It would also explain Ben’s reply of “You know I can’t do that,” when Widmore asked if he was there to kill him. If Widmore has already done something in the future, then Ben could not kill him, according to Daniel’s string theory.

The difference between Lost, City Slickers, and Scooby Doo has more to do with character development, writing, acting, etc…
