I don't buy the claim that money makes no difference. If extra money doesn't make a difference, why do middle and upperclass parents bother with fundraising? Are these well-educated people all deluded?

I'm not going to waste my time reading the referenced "bulk of rigorous research" (one paper by somebody connected with the Hoover Institute) unless I can also read a response written by someone who doesn't have a rightwing agenda.

Somebody should compile all the claims that a given state ranks very low on spending. I'll bet there are at least 30 states that are allegedly in the bottom five states in the country.

In the posting above, Jay references a large gift to the Irvine school system. I wonder if the money is coming from Donald Bren's related foundation. Bren is the largest real estate developer in the County and a multi-billionaire related to his successful real estate ventures in Irvine. His gift giving isn't purely altrusitic and represents a desire to improve the education of local schools which will increase the value of his local real estate holdings. As Jay suggests, private giving is isolated and not a long term solution. Private schools have more value as it represents a direct purchase by the student/parent.
